Having a high-speed internet connection isn’t a big deal in today’s time. However, the internet service providers in India are yet to provide a true unlimited internet connection to the users. The current Internet speed plans in India range from 512Kbps to more than 50Mbps speed. Even though the internet service providers advertise the internet plan as unlimited, there is a catch. The catch is FUP (fair usage policy).
Every unlimited internet connection comes with a FUP limit. When you cross the FUP, your internet speed for that month will be drastically reduced. For example, if you have a 15Mbps plan, and it comes with an FUP of 100GB. Post 100GB your internet speed will be reduced to somewhere 2Mbps, which will be unlimited for that month.
For a single user, 100GB of bandwidth is more than enough, if you don’t download too many movies in high-resolution or stream such contents. However, in case you share your internet connection with other people at your home, then you will run out of the FUP limit in no time, and you will be left with a fairly slow speed for the rest of the month. Your internet bandwidth could also become a victim of a newly released Windows update which can be up to 5GB in total size. And if you have more than one PC at home, you surely going to have a tough time managing the internet bandwidth with others.
If you share internet connection with other at your home or office, you would also need a WiFi router. So, what you can do here is limit the internet bandwidth on your router using the default internet bandwidth limit option.
For this tutorial, we will be using a TP-Link router. However, if you use other company’s router, you may need to follow the instructions given in your router’s manual. This guide is based on TP-Link 300M Wireless N Router Model No. TL-WR841N as it comes with a built-in Internet bandwidth limit function. If you are on Windows 10 and use a cellular-based network such as 3G/4G dongle to use the internet, then you can limit internet usage in Windows 10 easily.
Limit Internet Bandwidth on TP-Link Router
Open any web browser on your PC and enter the following IP address in the URL bar.
It will open a TP-Link router page showing your router model number at the right side of the window.
You will be asked to enter your username and password to log in. If you haven’t changed the password manually, it should be admin for both username and password.
Once you are logged into the router settings page, click on Bandwidth Control (left side pane) and select Control Settings.
Under Bandwidth Control Settings, check Enable bandwidth control.
Select Link Type as Other.
Below you should see two options Egress and Ingress.
- Egress bandwidth will control your upload speed.
- Ingress Bandwidth will control your download speed.
So set the Egress and Ingress (download and upload) speed according to your requirement.
Once you have made the changes to the bandwidth limit and set an internet bandwidth limit in TP-Link router, click the Save button and close the browser. If you want, you can check the download and upload speed of your internet connection to see if the settings have been applied successfully.
