There are several useful thing you could do if you have iOS  8 and Yosemite combination. Like, you would be able to record iPhone /iPad screen from Yosemite running Mac without any third party software.  Another feature you can use with this combination is Handoff. Handoff allows you to transfer tasks from one device to another with ease.

Not all Apple devices support Handoff feature. If you could see your device listed below in supported device list then you can proceed with the tutorial to enable Handoff on Mac Yosemite. However, having a iOS 8 and Yosemite running device does not guarantee that you would be able to use Handoff on it.

Handoff is supported by following devices:

  • MacBook Air
  • MacBook Pro
  • iMac (late 2012)
  • Mac Mini (late 2012)
  • Mac Pro (2013)

Other things to consider are Handoff requires Bluetooth 4.0 compatible devices to use it along with a newer version of iPhone’s like iPhone 5 or later. It may not be compatible with older version of iPads as well even if they are running on latest iOS 8.

Your devices should be within 33 feet area for HandOff to work. You also need an iCloud account with Bluetooth 4.0 compatible iDevice. So, if you meet the requirement, go ahead and follow these steps to Enable and use Handoff on Yosemite Mac, iPhone and iPad.

How to Enable HandOff on Mac OS X Yosemite

Step 1: Connect your devices to same network.

Step 2: Sign in to iCloud account on your Mac and iPhone or iPad with the same Apple ID.

Step 3: Now click on System preference.

Step 4: Select General preference.

Step 5: Enable “Allow Handoff between this and your iCloud devices”.

Step 6:  No more steps as you have successfully enabled Handoff on Yosemite.

Enable  Handoff on iOS 8 iPhone and iPad

Step 1: Connect your iPhone or iPad to same network as your Mac (Skip if already done).

Step 2: Sign in to iCloud account with the same Apple ID you used to connect in Mac (skip if already done).

Step 3: Now on your iPhone or iPad tap on Settings.

Step 4: Tap on General and Handoff and Suggested Apps.

Step 5: Switch on Handoff from the list.

That’s it. You have successfully enabled and configured Handoff on Yosemite Mac and iOS 8 iPhone or iPad. Currently,  Handoff supports only few default Apple apps like Calendar, Contacts, Mail, Maps, messages, Notes, Reminders and Safari.

To use any iOS app on your Mac through Handoff, simply launch the compatible app on your iOS 8 device (iPhone or iPad) and your app will be visible in your Mac’s Dock or in the application switcher. Simply click on Handoff icon beside app to launch it on your Mac.

To use Mac apps on your iPhone or iPad, simply launch any Yosemite compatible app like Keynote 6.0 on your Mac and the app will appear on your iOS device screen. You could find it on the lock screen of your iOS device (bottom left corner). The last thing to remember is that your iOS device should not be locked if you have handed it off to your Mac, else Handoff will not work until you unlock and wake your device up.
