How to Sideload Downloaded Apps on Windows Phone 8.1

Windows Phone 8.1 has brought several new features to Windows Phone 8 running smartphones. Like the ability to move Windows Phone 8.1 apps to SD card and the ability to sideload apps (APPX/XAP files) on your Windows Phone 8.1 running device. Earlier you needed a micro SD card to sideload Windows Phone apps, and if your device does not have a micro SD card slot, then it was just not possible.

However, with the release of Windows Phone 8.1, Microsoft removed this restriction and allowed every Windows Phone 8.1 running device to Sideload Windows Phone apps without the need for a micro SD card. It comes in handy when you own a smartphone like Nokia Lumia 925, 1020, 920, and 930 which does not have micro SD card slot, but want to sideload apps on it.

This feature can also help you in a situation where your phone does not have access to the internet, and you want to install apps using your computer. You can download windows phone apps from Windows Phone Store on your PC and then install it on your device. You can use the same file to share it with your friends as well.

Sideloading apps on Windows Phone 8.1 running device is easier than thought. Use your computer to download apps on your PC, now connect your device using a data cable and then transfer or move downloaded app file to SD card or phone memory of your device. Your phone will scan for new files and will allow you to install them. Follow below steps for the same.

Install – Sideload Apps (APPX/XAP files) on Windows Phone 8.1

Step 1: Download Apps and Games on your PC from Windows Phone Store.

Step 2: Once downloaded, Connect your Windows Phone to your PC using the data cable.

Step 3: Now copy downloaded APPX/XAP file from your PC and then move it to your phone storage external or internal storage.

Step 4: Once successfully moved, disconnect your device from PC.

Step 5: Now open Store app on your Windows Phone.

Step 6: Bring up the menu by tapping on three dots at the bottom.

Step 7: Next, select Install Local Apps.

Step 8: Here you will find a list of apps, that can be installed on your phone. Select your app and tap on Install.
