There can be many reasons for blocking a website. One of the common reasons for blocking a website is to prevent the children from accessing adult and gambling sites. Company and school authorities also block websites so that the employees and the students can concentrate on their study and work. Another reason to block a website could be that you don’t want anyone including your siblings and friends accessing a social media and video streaming websites like Facebook and YouTube, which will eat up your internet bandwidth in a matter of hours if you are on a limited internet plan.

How to Block Websites on Windows PC
Method 1: Changing DNS Server
Changing the DNS server is the easiest method you can apply to block all the harmful websites.
Step 1: Go to Control Panel > Click on Network and Sharing Center.
Step 2: Now click on Active Connection.
Step 3: Click on Adapter Setting, then Right Click on your Active Connection and select Properties.
Double Click on Network icon from the taskbar and click on Properties.
Step 4: Now double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
Step 5: Now select Use “the following DNS server addresses.”.
Step 6: Enter following DNS address in the given field as.
- Preferred DNS Server: 18.104.22.168
- Alternative DNS Server: 22.214.171.124
Step 7: Click on OK and save the setting.
Method 2: Edit Host File (Block any Specific websites)
Now if you want to block only few or a particular website then follow method 2. Here you will edit your host file to block any website.
Step 1: Go to or Open: C:Windowssystem32driversetc.
Step 2: Now you can see a file named Host, right-click on it and select Properties.
Step 3: In a new Windows click on Security Tab.
Step 4: In Security Tab, select Users (computer-PCUsers) and click Edit.
Step 5: In the next window “Permissions for hosts” again select Users and Check all the options except “Special Permissions” to allow permissions and then press OK. (Refer below image).
Step 6: Now click on Advance, then on change permission.
Step 7: In the next Window, select “Users (comouter-PCUsers) and click Edit.
Step 8: Select all the options in “Permission Entry for hosts” window and then Press OK for all previous windows. (Refer Below image).
Step 8: Now again double-click on Host file and Notepad to open it.
Step 9: Now your host file will open in notepad. Add IP address given below along with the web address at the last line of host file code.
Step 10: Save the file and you are done blocking the websites on your PC.
That’s it. Now if you try to open Facebook.com or Hotmail.com, your browser will show an error message. You can add as many websites as you want and can block websites.
