How to use iPhone as a Wi-Fi Hotspot


Apple introduced Personal Hotspot feature on its iPhones with the release of iOS 4.3. It lets you use your iPhone as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. Using iPhone’s personal Hotspot feature, you can share the phone data connection with any Wi-Fi enabled device to access the internet whether for work or play.


Before iOS 4.3iPhone users were using the traditional tethering feature, which was only limited to the one-to-one device through Bluetooth or USB cable. With the release of iOS 4.3, Apple expanded this feature with Personal Hotspot.

Now just turn on wireless hotspot feature in your iPhone to share the data connection with your  Wi-Fi enabled devices. The hotspot feature is a handy feature and if being offered by almost all the major mobile OS developers.

Stable internet connection is not available on the go. To have the internet while travelling you need to have a cellular device with data pack activated. But, what if your main device does not have cellular connectivity? You will find it difficult to connect the device to the internet.

An example could be, your laptop, which does not come with cellular connectivity. Now if you are travelling, either your should use a 3G or 4G USB dongle or you should look for a WiFi hotspot. This is where the ability to turn your iPhone into a WiFi hotspot comes in handy. You can just enable WiFi hotspot on your phone, connect your Laptop to the hotspot and access internet on the go.

How to use iPhone as Wi-Fi Hotspot

Here is how you can use your iPhone as Wi-Fi hotspot to share data connection on Laptop or PC.

Step 1:  Go to Settings > General > Network

Step 2:  Click on Personal Hotspot > slide the switch to ON

Step 3: Click on Wi-Fi password and enter the password (give any strong password. This will make sure that no unauthorized device can access your Wi-Fi connection).

Step 4: Now search for available Wi-Fi hotspot on your Laptop, PC or any other Wi-Fi enabled device

Step 6: You device should show your iPhone as Wi-Fi hotspot, select it.

Step 7: Enter the password, if it prompted to do so.
