There are two occasions, where you may want to use your Android Phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. First is if you travel a lot and work on the go, that too online and you don’t have access to the internet. The second is if your internet service provider is down for maintenance and it leaves you without internet access.

Now, if you own an Android smartphone then you can use your Android phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot and access internet through any other Wi-Fi enabled device including your laptop, PC, Mac or even portable gaming consoles.

Hotspot feature in Android smartphone is inbuilt and was introduced with Android 2.2 Froyo. The feature is still available in Android 5.0 Lollipop and Android 6.0 Marshmallow and also to be continued in upcoming Android versions. To use hotspot feature on your Android phone, you must be running on Android 2.2 or above version.

For Android users, all you need is an Android running device with an active data connection. Do note that the speed of you WiFi hotspot depends on your phone’s data connection speed. If you have 2G data pack enabled, then the speed will be too slow. However, if you are on a 3G or 4G LTE data pack enabled on your phone; and then you shall experience faster internet speed fairly on your phone. The speed may also fluctuate depending on the number of devices connected to your Android phone’s hotspot.

Points to remember before Tethering your Android Smartphone

  • Check, your Service Provider terms and conditions on Phone Tethering
  • Be sure about your data plan. Tethering eats lots of data on 3G or 4G network
  • Unlimited data plan is recommended.

How to use Wi-Fi hotspot on Android Smartphone

Here is how you can easily use or create Wi-Fi hotspot on your Android smartphone.

Step 1: From the Home Screen, click Settings.

Step 2: Now click on Wireless and Networks

Step 3: Click on Tethering and Portable hotspot

Step 4: Tick the box next to Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.

Step 5: Below tap Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings

Ste 6: Under Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings you can edit following settings

  • Network SSID
  • Security
  • Password

Step 7: Now search for available Wi-Fi hotspots using your Laptop, PC or any Wi-Fi enabled device

Step 8: Select your Handset/Phone and provide the password if it asks for
